Bernal Heights

Iconic Victorians ring Bernal Hill in this relaxed neighborhood that reaps some of the city’s warmest, sunniest weather. If you settle here, you can walk to locally owned coffeehouses, restaurants, shops and wine bars or hike to the top of the hill for sweeping skyline views. Come Saturday, stock up on fresh produce—including hard-to-find items like Asian fruit—at the Alemany Farmers’ Market, one of the oldest open-air markets in California.

If you’re a dog owner, your best friend will love Bernal Heights, too. In addition to St. Mary’s Dog Park where your pooch can romp off leash, other dog—and human-friendly parks in the neighborhood include recently upgraded Precita Park. A popular hangout for both locals and visitors, the park is rimmed with trendy cafes and shops. Although Bernal Heights exudes a peaceful village vibe, it’s close to both the 101 and 280 freeways.
